As I noted, while I am away I am re-posting older posts that I have updated — and this is one I have updated considerably. The text in its original form appeared in my book, Strangers and Pilgrims Once More, a work I would gladly rewrite today and recommend in its current state to no one. There is much in that volume — which I have come to dislike quite a bit, if you couldn’t already twig that — that I would, at the very least, retract (in Augustinian fashion). But some of the book’s contents are salvageable. I posted a reworked version of the chapter about the Bible on this page nearly two years ago, and I have revamped it yet again — probably for the last time.
