Mickey Rourke delivered an unlikely yet believable portrayal of St. Francis in Francesco (1989). To my surprise, he made a strong dramatic appearance in Man of God, the English-language Greek film about St. Nektarios of Aegina. The movie is slow-paced, and the acting is a little stilted in some scenes, but despite those aspects, I found it altogether quite stirring. The humanity, sufferings, prayer, and asceticism of the saint are presented with simplicity and straightforwardness. By the end, the viewer who has stayed with it has become acquainted with the life and trials of an extraordinarily holy man. The final scene, in which Rourke appears, is especially moving.
Those unacquainted with St. Nektarios, who was unjustly slandered and denounced more than once by hierarchs of his Church (he was a sort of Job or Jeremiah figure, and Christlike without question), might benefit from first reading about him here, or viewing the short Trisagion Films video below before watching Man of God:
There is also an interview with the film’s director, Yelena Popovic, on YouTube that is informative:
Here, too, is the trailer:
Lastly, the film is said to be available through Amazon and Apple TV, and that may be so in the United States. I’m in Norway, where that isn’t the case, and so I viewed it here with no difficulty: https://www.bilibili.tv/en/video/2048219613.
Thank you Dear Addison 💛🙏 for sharing about Saint Nektarios 🙏 I was unfamiliar [though I've heard of the name before], but now I love this Saint so much 🫶🙏 and I plan and look forward to finding & reading his Blessed Writings/Teachings - Thank you very much Dear Addison for that and the resources you've provided kindly here, and as always 💛🫶🙏
I was listening to the interview and somewhere near the end of it, I believe Blessed and Precious Yelena Popovic mentioned a miracle - I was curious and found this, if anyone here is interested as well [Short Synopsis: It was a miracle attributed to Archangel Michael, there was a warning about a Storm approaching but then also found on her phone that it was Archangel Michael Day! She also mentions feeling a personal connection with Archangel Michael and that the church was also dedicated to the Archangel as well - very interesting! - so she had a feeling that everything would work out and so decided they were going ahead with the filming and with the whole crew along regardless - it was still raining when they were filming on the inside but once that was done and it was time to film on the outside, the rain stopped immediately and completely! - Maybe this is a reminder to always have faith 🙏, as things may not be as what it seems simply - e.g., just because it was raining then, doesn't mean anything as the fuller/complete picture or whole story reveals otherwise so to speak - that they weren't affected or impeded by it was the main key, so not so much having no rain at all!]: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8Gm41gm_ao
I've never really prayed to an Archangel before, but because I believe Yelena Popovic from watching her interview and her testimony about the miracle above:
Archangel Michael, Saint Nektarios, Saint Porphyrios [my favourite Saint/personally one I feel most drawn to - if that makes sense 🙏]: Pray for us 🙏💛🙌
It's a great movie.
