In the previous post on the subject, I listed four “types” (ideas or images that exemplify the characteristics) of Christian spiritual practice. These are: (1) Pilgrimage, (2) Abiding, (3) Asceticism, and (4) “Marital” or “Nuptial” union. I suppose someone could come up with additional images, but I believe such proposals would only prove to be sub-categories of the four already cited. (For example, one might suggest the image of “spiritual warfare.” I would say, though, that that image falls under “Asceticism” above. Likewise, the image of an “ascent” or a “journey” falls under the – admittedly, arbitrary – category of “Pilgrimage.” And so on.)
