Although he was addressing monks in this instance, the following passage from Thomas Merton’s slim volume, Contemplative Prayer (approved for publication nearly six weeks before Merton’s death in December 1968), might just as well have been written for anyone – whether in the cloister or “in the world” – who practices contemplative or meditative prayer:[1]
